China's LNG and coal imports fell sharply in 2025, signaling a strategic shift to clean energy. Record electricity output and tech exports coincide with reduced fossil fuel reliance.

China's Energy Imports Decline

China's imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal fell significantly in 2025, reflecting a strategic shift towards a cleaner power system less dependent on fossil fuels. In a year marked by profound transformations, China achieved record-breaking electricity generation and clean energy technology exports, while its LNG and coal imports declined, and crude oil imports rose slightly. These figures reveal a unique dynamic of the world's largest producer and consumer of electricity. Total LNG imports reached 66.6 million metric tons, down 11.6 million tons or 15% from 2024, marking the lowest annual level since 2022, according to company data.
