Shenzhen Installs Glass That Turns Transparent When Someone Smokes

In the Chinese city of Shenzhen, special glass has been installed in public toilets that becomes transparent upon detecting smoke. This measure is aimed at combating smoking in prohibited areas. Previously, traditional measures such as slogans and simple fines had not produced significant results. The glass uses a special technology: it is usually frosted, but when the smoke sensor is triggered, it becomes transparent within seconds to draw attention. The Shuibei and Jinzuo centers, which have implemented this technology, inform users of its properties with a sign that reads: 'The glass will become transparent when you smoke. Restrain your desire to smoke if you don't want to become famous on the internet.' One of the employees at the Jinzuo center, named Zhao, told local television that they began the experiment in August and have received positive feedback from shop owners and shoppers. Previously, shopping centers had received numerous complaints from visitors about smoking in the restrooms. To prevent potential privacy violations, they stated that the smoke sensor will be calibrated to ensure it only activates when smoke is present, and a reset button will be installed nearby in case of accidental activation. The cost of this technology has not been disclosed. This initiative, which covered the restrooms in the Shuibei International Center and the Shuibei Jinzuo building, has been widely praised online. However, lawyer Lu Weiguo from the Guangdong Giho law firm warned that if the glass window malfunctions and violates users' rights, the shopping centers will bear legal liability. Many users online have highly praised this new technology. One commenter suggested installing smoke-operated systems in shower stalls, while another said, 'We urgently need this technology in all restrooms in China.' A third added, 'Finally, there is an effective measure to combat smoking.'
