China Confirms Support for Peace Talks in the Middle East

Beijing — AFP — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi confirmed in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday Beijing's support for "maintaining the momentum of peace negotiations" in the Middle East. Wang Yi said in a statement: "The negotiations serve the interests of the Iranian people and are also the common hope of regional countries and the international community." He added that China is ready to continue playing a "constructive role" for peace in the Middle East after the first round of Iranian-American talks in Islamabad over the weekend failed to reach an agreement. In turn, the Iranian Foreign Minister said: "Tehran expects China to play a positive role in promoting peace and stopping the conflict," according to the Chinese statement. Araghchi also expressed "Iran's readiness to continue seeking a rational and realistic solution through peaceful negotiations".
