Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Beijing on Wednesday, where the two countries exchanged views and coordinated positions on the development of bilateral relations, cooperation in various fields, and international and regional issues of common concern. According to Xinhua News Agency, citing a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jakun, prior to the visit, confirmed that China and Russia are bound by a comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination in the new era, having made important contributions to promoting a multi-polar world characterized by fairness and order, reforming and improving global governance, and safeguarding international justice and equity. President Xi's meeting with Lavrov took place within the framework of his official visit to Beijing, during which he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday to discuss preparations for a meeting between the two heads of state in the current year and to exchange in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern, including the US-Iranian conflict, the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, and the Ukrainian crisis. Wang Yi held talks with his Russian counterpart Lavrov, stating that the current international situation is witnessing acute turmoil, the harm from unipolar hegemony is exacerbating, the global governance system is undergoing profound changes, and the issues of peace and development for humanity face severe challenges. He added that in the face of a complex and volatile external environment, thanks to the personal care and strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China-Russia relations have remained solid, and cooperation in all fields has been strong and robust. Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation between them, as well as the beginning of China's 15th Five-Year Plan. Important Agreement He emphasized that China and Russia must implement the important agreements reached by the two heads of state, and elevate the bilateral strategic partnership of coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields to a higher level. He added that both sides should strengthen cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, and, taking advantage of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), implement the agreements reached at the Tianjin summit and support Kyrgyzstan in successfully hosting this year's summit. He also stressed the need for the two countries to work together to maintain the momentum of unity among BRICS countries and protect the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South. Strategic Coordination Wang Yi called on both sides to maintain strategic coordination on major international and regional issues, cooperate in implementing multipolarity and international ethics, and work together to advance the process of a multi-polar world. In turn, Lavrov expressed Russia's readiness to work with China to maintain close high-level exchanges, deepen practical cooperation, and achieve mutually beneficial and win-win results for both sides. He added that the current international situation faces severe challenges, and some countries are seeking to form 'small circles' to contain Russia and China. Lavrov called on both sides to well-align with the global initiatives proposed by the Chinese side and Russia's vision for a Greater Eurasian Partnership and the Eurasian security architecture, maintain coordination and cooperation in the multilateral sphere and in international and regional affairs, protect their respective national interests, and work together to safeguard the security and stability of the international system. Following their talks, the two sides jointly signed the 2026 Consultation Plan between the two countries' foreign ministries.
