Beijing — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday to 'enhance coordination' between the two countries on international and regional issues, according to official Chinese media.
Wang's two-day visit to Pyongyang, his first since 2019, aims to strengthen relations between the two East Asian neighbors after the resumption of transport links that were halted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During his meeting with Kim, Wang stated: 'China and North Korea, while firmly upholding their sovereignty, security, and developing interests, should enhance communication and coordination on major international and regional issues,' according to China's official Xinhua News Agency.
He added: 'China is ready to work with North Korea to maintain close contact, enhance cooperation, and give the traditional friendship between the two countries a new contemporary meaning.'
Wang's visit comes as the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump steps up efforts to revive high-level talks with Pyongyang, and amid reports of a possible summit this year during Trump's anticipated visit to Beijing next May.
