Concerns Over Rare Earth Metals Impact on Healthcare

Experts warn that China's export restrictions on rare earth metals like gadolinium may jeopardize healthcare, particularly for patients needing critical diagnostics and treatments.

Concerns Over Rare Earth Metals Impact on Healthcare

The element "gadolinium" is used to produce contrast agents that are beneficial in some patients before magnetic resonance imaging scans, helping doctors diagnose brain tumors more easily. The International Energy Agency states that China controls 90% of rare earth metals production in the world, raising alarm among experts due to the impact that a shortage of these metals could have on advanced technologies.

In an effort to pressure the U.S. administration, Beijing imposed restrictions on the export of seven key metals, including "gadolinium" and "iterbium," which are used in civilian and military applications. These restrictions could hinder China's access to advanced technology and impact public health, similar measures have been taken by Beijing in the past.

On its part, the United States supplies large quantities of Chinese medical supplies and relies on China for essential raw materials necessary for drug manufacturing. There is an increasing concern about the impact of the trade war between the two countries on the American health care system, where access to treatments and vital technologies could be affected.

Chinese drug exports to the United States are projected to reach 19 billion dollars in 2024, reflecting the increasing reliance on Chinese medical products. The imposed restrictions on rare earth metal exports may expose patients to shortages in health care and create a looming threat regarding their implications on defense manufacturing and public health.
