On Tuesday, China pledged to support the World Health Organization after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order just days after his inauguration.
China expressed its readiness to provide financial support to the WHO, which had been seriously jeopardized after the Trump administration froze the organization's funding. This step by the White House led to widespread condemnation and sparked outrage worldwide, as the WHO plays a key role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview, Giraud Haruo, a representative of Beijing in Geneva, stated: "China has expressed a decisive intention to support the WHO in its work and continue to fight COVID-19 with the international community." This reaffirms China's desire to act in the spirit of the Paris Agreement on climate and to protect global health and equity.
