China Condemns US Actions Against Venezuelan President

Beijing, January 6 (Xinhua) -- The United States has violated Venezuela's national sovereignty and undermined the stability of international relations by openly processing and conducting a supposed 'trial' of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a court under its own jurisdiction, ignoring his status as head of state. This was stated on Tuesday by Mao Ning, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who added that 'no country can place its own norms above international law.' According to a Xinhua report accessed by the Argentine News Agency, the official made the statement at a regular press conference, after noting that China urges the United States to immediately release President Maduro and his wife, as well as to guarantee their personal safety. 'No country can act as a world policeman, nor claim the role of an international judge,' stated Mao Ning, who indicated that China has consistently defended that all nations respect the right of other peoples to independently choose their own path of development and comply with international law and the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, with major countries setting an example in particular.
