Beijing Achieves Record Air Quality Levels

In 2025, Beijing recorded its best air quality levels ever, thanks to the mass adoption of electric vehicles and clean energy. The capital has successfully reduced the level of harmful PM2.5 particles to a record low.

Beijing Achieves Record Air Quality Levels

Beijing achieved its best air quality levels in 2025 since measurements began, driven primarily by the mass adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and the transition to clean energy sources. According to the annual report presented by Mayor Yin Yong, the annual average density of PM2.5 (the most harmful particles to health) fell to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. This represents an 11.5% decrease from the previous year and is the first time this indicator has dropped below the 30-microgram threshold. The key to this ecological transformation is a comprehensive decarbonization strategy. Beijing already has over 1.3 million new energy vehicles in circulation, with an annual production capacity of 700,000 units. Green energy (wind, solar, and hydroelectric) now accounts for 36% of the metropolis's total electricity consumption. In 2025, the number of days with good or excellent air quality exceeded 80% of the year (reaching 311 days), marking a new historical record. To sustain this progress, Mayor Yin Yong announced significant investments in supporting infrastructure.
