Child shatters $300k golden crown at Beijing museum

A child dropped a golden crown worth over $322,000 at a museum in Beijing, China, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

The incident took place at Museum X, where a young child touched the display case and then knocked the crown to the floor, shattering it. The crown, belonging to internet personality Zhang Kaiyi, weighs one kilogram and was intricately crafted from pure gold by her husband, artist Zhang Yudong, for their wedding day.

Experts are now assessing the damage at an estimated $56,868, and there are fears that the child's parents could face legal liability. Although the piece is fully insured, Zhang Kaiyi believes its value cannot be determined by the weight of the gold alone. She stated, "Therefore, I am seeking online advice on the best way to calculate the damage."

A spokesperson for the museum had previously stated that "the display cover was not secured properly." Lawyers have confirmed that, given the crown's unique characteristics and high value, the display case should have been more stable and protective.

It is still unclear if a 'Do Not Touch' sign was placed on the exhibit before the incident.

In a later post, Zhang clarified that she never intended to seek compensation from the child's family or expose anyone over the content posted online.
