China is increasingly concerned about the use of AI-powered smart glasses for cheating on exams. Despite bans, the devices are becoming more accessible and effective, posing serious challenges to education systems.

Spread of Smart Glasses for Cheating in China

Using small, ring-like devices, questions can be entered into the system and answers displayed instantly, posing significant challenges for educational institutions in maintaining exam integrity in the age of artificial intelligence. The evolution in the design of these devices has fueled their proliferation, with modern models from companies like Xiaomi and Alibaba becoming stylish and lightweight, making them hard to distinguish from regular glasses. Despite an official ban on using such glasses in high-stakes exams like university entrance and civil service tests, their use persists in regular school exams, yielding impressive results. Chinese authorities are increasingly concerned about the spread of smart glasses for cheating during exams amid the rapid advancement of AI technology. In an experiment conducted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a student using AI-powered smart glasses achieved a rank in the top five out of 100 students, scoring 92.5 out of 100, compared to an average score of 72. Economically, these glasses are not an affordable option for all students, with prices ranging from $270 to over $1,000. However, platforms like Xianyu have offered a practical alternative by renting these devices at low daily rates, contributing to their expanded use. Testimonies from students, such as one from Hebei province, reveal the extent of this phenomenon, confirming their use of smart glasses to cheat in subjects they fear failing and even renting them to other students. A recent report by Rest of the World revealed that these devices are gaining popularity among students, especially with the integration of advanced language models like ChatGPT, providing users with unprecedented ability to get instant answers inside exam halls. These glasses rely on built-in cameras and audio technologies that allow scanning and analyzing exam questions, then displaying the answers directly on the lens using augmented reality, undetectable by proctors.
