Despite laws in China that criminalize child abuse, it is unclear if the mother faced any legal consequences. The incident sparked a wave of anger online. A 10-month-old infant was rushed to the hospital, his body covered in needle marks. It was revealed that his abusive mother had stabbed him hundreds of times with unsterilized needles for various reasons. According to the South China Morning Post, a doctor from the Spine Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Shihua Hospital recounted the details of what happened in a video online. In the video, Dr. Sui Wenyuan explained that in December of last year, a 10-month-old infant was admitted to the pediatric department of a people's hospital in Yunnan province, southwest China, with a fever and convulsions. The incident caused widespread shock on the internet. The newspaper reported that the mother appeared to be ignorant and lacked scientific knowledge, and showed signs of psychological distress. One commenter wrote: "Please do not leave his biological parents to raise him anymore." Another wrote: "What a poor child, born in an unsuitable family." Estimates suggested the child may have been stabbed between 500 and 600 times. In the latest incident, the mother inserted a needle, typically used for mending shoe soles, into the baby's neck. The needle broke, and its tip became embedded in the cervical vertebrae, requiring surgery. "I can't believe there is such cruelty in this day and age!" one commenter wrote. "What a horrifying incident!"
