Chinese Scientists Successfully Explore Antarctic Ice

Chinese scientists have successfully conducted an experiment to explore the Antarctic ice cover using advanced microwave radiometers, uncovering temperature distributions beneath the ice.

The Academic Expedition of the Chinese Academy of Sciences No. 41 successfully conducted research on the Antarctic sea ice cover, using an ultra-wideband radar with microwave waves. The scientists carried out simultaneous airborne and ground-based experiments with the involvement of helicopters and icebreakers, which allowed them to successfully identify the thermal characteristics of the ice in Antarctica using distant sensing.

A researcher from the National Space Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhou De, noted that the thinning of the sea ice cover in the Southern Ocean usually begins in spring, but traditional methods for determining temperatures under the ice are complex to apply.
