China Sees Record Travel Surge During New Year Holiday

China kicked off the New Year holiday with a notable increase in population mobility. According to data published this Friday by the Ministry of Transport, on Thursday there were over 207 million interregional trips, representing a 20.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Road transport was the most used mode, concentrating 186.28 million displacements (a 17.5% increase). However, the most vertiginous growth occurred in the railway sector, which transported 18.56 million passengers, marking a 67.9% annual increase. In contrast, civil aviation showed a 10.3% decline with 1.95 million trips made during the first day of the three-day break. In addition to the movement of people, the logistics sector showed intense activity: the postal service processed 451 million packages and delivered another 531 million across the country, reflecting the dynamism of domestic consumption during the festivities that mark the beginning of 2026.
