China has begun to eliminate tariffs on a list of U.S. products, in a possible attempt to soften the impact of the trade war on its economy. This list, which consists of 131 items, includes products such as pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals, and has generated some optimism in the stock markets following the news.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that it is considering resuming talks with the United States, which could indicate a shift in stance from China. According to statements from the ministry, the United States has expressed interest in initiating dialogues through appropriate channels.
The exemption of tariffs on critical U.S. products seems to be a pragmatic strategy by China, which aims to protect its economy and avoid possible negative consequences on its key imports. Although the list of exempt products has not been officially confirmed, it is estimated that its value is around 40 billion dollars, representing approximately 24% of imports from the United States in 2024.
Experts point out that this measure reflects a strategy of reciprocity more than a diplomatic gesture, and can be beneficial in calming tensions in the trade war between the two countries. Although the exact origin of the list of exempt products is unknown, some Chinese companies have already managed to import items from this list without paying tariffs, suggesting a change in the bilateral dynamics between China and the United States.
