The electric bicycle exchange program in China has had a significant impact on the market, facilitating the exchange of approximately 1,019,000 electric bicycles in the first two months of 2025. This exchange boosted sales of new vehicles worth 2.66 billion yuan, around 370 million dollars.
Data from the Ministry of Commerce indicates that since its implementation last year, this program has allowed the exchange of 2.4 million old electric bicycles for new ones, generating sales of about 6.4 billion yuan. The initiative has been supported by five government departments, including its recent extension announced in January.
More than 40,000 retail businesses have participated in this initiative, mostly private businesses or small companies, reflecting the growing enthusiasm of the market. It is noted that the Ministry of Commerce is committed to continuing to promote this exchange program, considering it a policy that benefits multiple objectives, such as stimulating consumption and improving the quality of life for consumers.
This push for the exchange of electric bicycles is part of a series of measures adopted by China in early 2025 to expand the scope of the consumer goods exchange program, all aimed at stimulating domestic demand and fostering economic growth. In February, this program recorded particularly strong performance, with 863,000 units exchanged, surpassing the previous monthly record set in 2024. This increase in participation suggests that the program is gaining momentum across the country.
