Chinese officials expressed hope for cooperation with Washington on resolving trade issues. This statement was made after the inauguration of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who promised to introduce strict tariffs on exports from the second-largest economy in the world.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Gao Zhiyuan stated that "China is ready to strengthen dialogue and communication with the United States, and also to resolve differences through appropriate means," adding that his country "hopes that the United States will cooperate with China to jointly promote stable economic and trading relations" between the two countries.
Acknowledging existing "differences and tensions" between the two countries, Gao emphasized that "common interests and areas of cooperation between the countries are enormous."
