The resident of China named Li from Hunan Province faced psychological distress after she received a harsh reprimand from her supervisor at work. According to the "South China Morning Post", Li found herself in a state of isolation, unable to eat, move, or socialize, as reported by the publication "Russia Today".
The Li family reported that if she lifted her pillow from under her head, she would hang motionless in the air. Additionally, she lost control over basic physical functions, which requires constant assistance from relatives to remind her of using the bathroom. Dr. Czia De Huan from the Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine described her condition as "vegetative," marked by a lack of movement or reaction, with symptoms of severe depression characterized by apathy, abnormal movements, loss of control, and diminished responsiveness.
Such a rare and severe form of depression, according to the doctor, often arises after a powerful emotional shock or stress. Li has been isolated from people around her, ultimately leading to a deterioration of her condition. Under the supervision of Dr. Czia, Li received the necessary treatment and support for recovery from this critical condition.
This case has sparked widespread concern and discussion on social media in mainland China. Results from a survey conducted by the Chinese psychological society highlighted alarming mental health conditions at workplaces in China. 4.8% of workers suffer from depression at work, while 80% experience emotional stress on the job. Additionally, 60% of respondents reported severe stress, and about 40% exhibited symptoms of depression, according to Shangguan News (2023).
According to employees, they are shocked and empathetic towards Li's plight, and also express their frustration regarding the publishing industry and the stress at the workplace.
