China Launches Traffic Robot in Hangzhou

China has launched its first human-like robot to manage traffic and congestion in Hangzhou, a major tech hub in the country with a population of around 12 million, where traffic flow remains a long-standing challenge. The robot, named 'Hangzhou 1', is powered by artificial intelligence and can perform standard, fluent directing movements such as 'go straight' and 'stop'. The 'Hangzhou 1' robot can also recognize traffic violations like not wearing a safety helmet, crossing the stop line, pedestrians crossing outside crosswalks, and issue audible warnings. The robot stands 1.8 meters tall and is equipped with cameras, sensors, and gesture-based signals, and is programmed to support traffic officers during peak hours of vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians. The robot's movements, including stop, go straight, or wait signals, are inspired by real police officers, allowing it to mimic common command gestures.
