Centuries-Old Statues in Hangzhou Endure Public Abuse

In the picturesque West Lake area of Hangzhou, two kneeling monuments have endured five centuries of brutal abuse. Their names remain among the most despised in Chinese history. The statues, first erected during the Ming Dynasty in the 15th century, have been replaced eleven times due to the sheer scale of the vandalism. They depict Qin Hui, a 12th-century Song Dynasty chancellor, and his wife Wang. The statues are depicted with bowed heads, hands bound behind their backs, and their faces turned toward the tomb of the general they helped execute. Every day, hundreds of visitors line up to slap, kick, or spit on them. Qin Hui is remembered not for diplomacy, but for betraying one of China's greatest military heroes, General Yue Fei. The current statues date back to 1979, and their decay and erosion are the result of centuries of collective resentment. Visitors slap the statues to ask for luck, to show loyalty or national pride, or sometimes just to participate in the ritual. Tour guides sell sticks to allow tourists to hit the sculptures with greater force. This hatred has also seeped into daily life. Historians say that Qin framed Yue for treason after the general refused to abandon a successful campaign against the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty. Yue was executed in prison, and Qin became a symbol of political betrayal. It is said that a popular fried snack called 'youtiao', or 'oil devil', symbolizes the deep-frying of Qin Hui and his wife together as punishment. The newspaper 'Le Figaro' noted that in five hundred years of symbolic representation, few monuments have achieved such a prominent status of hatred as these two.
