China has seen a significant increase in organ donation after death, with a year-on-year rise of 4.5% in 2024, totaling 6,744 posthumous donations, according to a recent official report. The data was released during the 8th China-International Organ Donation Conference and the Belt and Road Forum on the Development of International Cooperation in Organ Donation and Transplantation, held this Monday in Guangzhou, the capital of southern Guangdong province. The "Report on the Development of Organ Donation and Transplantation in China (2024)" revealed that 364,000 new voluntary registrations for posthumous organ donation were recorded last year. Notably, the majority of new registrants in 2024 were in the 18-35 age group, accounting for 77% of all new registrations. According to the report, China's total number of organ donation cases last year reached 11,249. This figure breaks down as follows: 6,744 posthumous donations and 4,505 donations made by living relatives. The country also surpassed 24,000 organ transplant surgeries performed in 2024.
