HarmonyOS: China's tech leap

On Thursday, China's Cyberspace Administration announced that the country has reached a significant milestone in the development of core software and integrated circuits over the last five years (2021‑2025). The success is marked by HarmonyOS, the open‑source operating system, which has already been installed more than 1.19 million times, paving the way toward technological independence.

China’s digital transformation rests on four pillars: internet penetration rose from 70.4 % to 79.7 %, significantly narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural areas. The use of IT in agriculture grew 30 %, while rural e‑commerce sales reached $355 billion in 2024.

Telemedicine now covers the entire country, reaching all cities and districts. With these indicators, Beijing concludes its current five‑year plan, showing that AI and digitalization are not future projects but real drivers of the economy and essential services.

China consolidates its position as a global technology powerhouse by achieving 700 officially registered generative AI products.
