Beijing, Dec 10 (NA) – China has solidified its position as a global innovation leader by becoming the first country to accumulate a total of five million valid national invention patents, the National Intellectual Property Administration (IPA) announced.
This milestone underscores the country's ambition to prioritize quality over mere quantity in technological innovation.
The IP regulator also highlighted that China's international patent applications filed through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) have maintained the world's leading position for the sixth consecutive year, according to Noticias Argentinas news agency.
Strategic Shift for the Future The National Intellectual Property Administration emphasized that during the 14th Five-Year Plan, China's IP policy underwent a crucial strategic shift, transitioning from a focus on quantity accumulation to strengthening the quality of inventions.
This transition has not only accelerated the commercialization of high-value patents but also illustrates China's commitment to innovation-driven development.
Goals Exceeded and Focus on High Value The Asian giant's strategic pivot towards quality is reflected in the rapid achievement of its internal targets: By June 2025, the number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people in China reached 15.3.
This figure has already surpassed the target of 12 set in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).
The push for quality is also evident in the market: the industrialization rate of corporate invention patents experienced significant growth, rising from 44.9% in 2020 to 53.3% in 2024.
The regulator indicated that this process lays a solid foundation for achieving greater self-sufficiency and strength in science and technology ahead of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).
Furthermore, the rate of technology transfer between universities and research institutions has continued to increase.
