China Opposes Any Targeting of Iran's New Leader

Beijing on Monday opposed any targeting of Iran's new leader, following previous Israeli threats. A spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry stated that China opposes any intervention in other countries' internal affairs under any pretext and respects Iran's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. Israel had previously warned that any successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of a joint attack with the US on Tehran, would be a target for them, even before Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen. US President Donald Trump also said on Sunday that the new supreme leader would 'not remain long' without his approval. The Chinese spokesperson emphasized that Mojtaba Khamenei's appointment is an internal Iranian matter. 'We have been informed about this matter. This is a decision made by the Iranian side in accordance with its constitution,' the spokesperson added. The spokesperson also called on all parties to immediately stop military operations, resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible, and avoid any further escalation of tensions.
