Chinese Boy Wakes from 55-Day Coma Thanks to Classmates' Videos

An eight-year-old boy from central China regained consciousness after 55 days in a coma, thanks to touching video messages from his classmates. Liao Chouksi from Yiyang city in Hunan province fell into a coma following a car accident last November. Doctors gave his family a bleak prognosis, stating that his chances of waking up were minimal due to severe brain damage and lung injuries. However, his mother did not give up and took him to several hospitals in search of treatment. When a doctor told her that familiar sounds or favorite music could stimulate certain areas of the brain and help him wake up, the boy's mother began playing his favorite music and school morning exercises for him daily. Meanwhile, Liao's teacher encouraged his classmates to record heartfelt video messages. In one video, a boy said, "Chouksi, wake up soon, let's play football together." After 45 days in a coma, Liao responded by moving his eyelids. A few days later, he smiled when he heard his teacher's voice. On the 55th day, he regained consciousness and was able to move his left hand. His teacher and classmates visited him in the hospital, bringing toys and cards. The teacher joked that he would excuse Liao from his homework, which made the boy happily try to open his eyes and wave his hand. Liao's mother told the media, "I finally saw the sun behind the clouds. It's a real miracle." In another video, a girl said, "We all miss you, Chouksi. Exams are coming up, and we are waiting for you to come back and study with us. If you can hear us, please open your eyes." She expressed her deep gratitude to the doctors, teachers, and classmates, adding, "I hope my son's case will become a source of hope for families facing similar circumstances." Reports indicate that the boy's health is steadily improving, although he still has a long way to go to a full recovery. Liao's story has inspired many on social media in China, where related videos have garnered over 10 million views. One online commenter wrote, "Some things cannot be explained by medicine. Chouksi will definitely return to school." Another boy sang Liao's favorite song, while others shared funny stories from the classroom. Liao's mother would play videos and recordings of his math teacher's lessons by his bedside every day. One follower wrote, "Let's leave it to love and miracles."
