Chinese Father Travels 900km to Open Food Stall for Daughter

A Chinese father quit his job and traveled nearly 900 kilometers to set up a food stall near his daughter's university after she complained that the meals served at the university cafeteria lacked the 'home-cooked taste' she was used to. This father's story has gone viral across mainland social media, as an appreciation for what he did for his daughter's happiness. Li Bengdi, a second-year student at Jilin Normal University in the northern province of Jilin, had repeatedly expressed her dissatisfaction with the university food, considering it unhealthy and nothing like the dishes she used to eat at home. After hearing her complaints repeatedly, her father made a decisive decision. He resigned from his job at a barbecue restaurant in Tianjin, about 900 kilometers south of Siping, and traveled to southern China to learn how to cook fried rice and noodles the way his daughter liked. He then rented a small stall near the university gate to be close to his daughter. The father launched his own project in mid-October last year, but the beginning was not easy. On his first day, he sold only a small amount of rice, making a meager profit of less than 70 yuan (about $10), the same amount his daughter earned from tutoring a young child. Li felt sad for her father and his sincere desire to make her happy, so she decided to share his story on her university's social media platform, praising him as a man who cares deeply about serving clean food and constantly seeks to improve his work by seeking advice and experience. Li did not expect what happened the next day. A large number of people, including students, teachers, and residents from the surrounding areas, flocked to her father's stall, forming long queues. Some even bought more than they needed just to support the father. In recent weeks, Li has been using her free time to help her father run the business. She said, 'A month ago, my father told me he felt cold while working because of the weather, but now he is busy all the time, and his heart feels warm.' She added, 'My father never aspired to make a big profit; he just wished to be able to make a living. Today, he feels at ease for two reasons: he is taking care of me, and he can support himself.' Li confirmed that her relationship with her father has grown stronger since her mother passed away several years ago, and they have relied on each other to face life. She recalled that when she was thinking about which university to choose, she didn't know which city to pick, but her father reassured her, saying he would follow her wherever she went. Smiling, she said, 'He kept his promise.' 'While many describe a father's love as majestic as mountains, my father's love for me is as warm as the sun,' she added. The story has captivated thousands of followers on social media. One person commented, 'He is not just serving her fried rice; he is giving her pure love, like any loving father.' Another wrote, 'The dishes must be clean, because his daughter is the one eating from them.'
