90-Year-Old Chinese Man Travels by Bicycle for Decades After Family Tragedy

After losing his entire family within two years, a 90-year-old Chinese man named Zhang left his home and began a nomadic life on his bicycle. This long journey, which lasted for decades, became his search for solace and an escape from grief. His story garnered widespread attention across China after a woman named Bai Xiaobai encountered him in the city of Putian in southeastern Fujian province and helped him push his tricycle. In the 1990s, Zhang's son, his son's wife, and his eight-year-old grandson were killed in a traffic accident. The following year, his wife, overwhelmed by grief, passed away from a serious illness. Despite accepting help from others, Zhang tried to repay them in his own way by covering his dilapidated tricycle with missing person posters. During his stay in Putian, Bai visited him daily, took him for breakfast, celebrated his birthday, and played Chinese chess with him. A local newspaper, 'Fujian Daily', reported that Zhang planned to continue his journey north to Mount Wuyi before eventually returning to Kaifeng, where authorities had promised to provide him with a senior living allowance upon his arrival. His story sparked a wide response on Chinese social media, with one user commenting: 'Turning sorrow into strength to move forward is an exceptional feat by Grandpa Zhang, as the difficulties did not stop him from continuing his journey.' He also told Bai: 'I have turned the page on the past, and I want to spend the rest of my life traveling and enjoying the beauty of nature.' According to Fujian Television, Zhang's memory has begun to fade, and he can no longer recall his home address accurately. He replaced his bicycle with a tricycle, and over the course of nearly three decades, he has traveled long distances across mountains, lakes, deserts, and cities. His journey took him from Xinjiang and Gansu in the northwest to Shanghai and Zhejiang in the east, and then to Xiamen and Quanzhou in the south, before he arrived in Fujian this past January. Zhang said that he distanced himself from his hometown, fearing to relive the pain of the past, preferring to seek peace through constant movement.
